A Perfect Day for Bananafish (3 of 3)

Craig Smith

Ink and color

As a former student of anatomy, artist Craig Smith developed an interest in skeletal and muscular systems. He studies animals and skeletons in their true forms in order to develop his drawings. Smith was primarily concerned with shape, color, and detail. These three drawings of a pelican have been arranged as a horizontal triptych. Each of the drawings measures 32 inches by 40 inches and each shows the bird from a different vantage point with unique wing positions. Colorful, detailed heads are contrasted with the two-dimensional, simplified depiction of the birds body. The materials used in Birds in Flight´┐Ż were permanent dye marker, charcoal, colored pencil and ink.
